“Genuine leather” sounds premium, but it doesn’t always mean high-quality leather.
If you’ve ever seen terms like full-grain leather, top-grain leather, split leather, and genuine leather, you’ve probably wondered what they actually mean, and which one is better.
The difference starts with one thing: which layer of the hide is used, and how much of its natural structure is preserved.
A natural hide is made up of several layers. The strongest and most compact fibers are found near the outer grain layer, while the deeper layers become looser and more fibrous. That structure has a major impact on durability, texture, appearance, and how the leather ages over time.
Full-Grain Leather keeps the complete natural grain surface intact. It is not heavily sanded or corrected to hide natural marks. Small scars, pores, wrinkles, and color variations may remain visible, and these are part of the leather’s natural character.
Because the dense outer fibers are preserved, full-grain leather is known for its durability and its ability to develop a rich patina over time.
Top-Grain Leather also comes from the upper section of the hide, but the surface is usually sanded or corrected to create a smoother and more uniform appearance.
Split Leather comes from the lower layers of the hide. Its fiber structure is looser, so coatings, embossing, or other finishing treatments are often used to improve its appearance and performance.
And then there is Genuine Leather.
Despite the name, “genuine leather” does not represent a specific quality grade. It simply means that real leather is used. The actual quality can vary greatly depending on the leather layer, processing method, and construction.

At CONTACTS FAMILY, we focus on premium full-grain leather goods designed for long-term use. Our leather materials are carefully selected, and our full-grain leather products are supported by SGS testing and material verification, adding an extra layer of confidence in the materials we use.
From leather selection and cutting to stitching, edge finishing, hardware fitting, and final quality inspection, we pay attention to the details that determine how a leather product looks, feels, and ages over time.
We believe good leather should not simply look premium on day one. It should become more personal with use, developing richer color, softer texture, and a natural patina of its own.
